How many times have you heard that too much salt is bad for your health?
There is definitely truth to this.
Too much salt in your diet can lead to an increase in blood pressure which, places more strain on the heart, arteries, kidneys and brain. Increased pressure on these organs may lead to a greater risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia or kidney disease.
It's a good thing I'm not a chef. It's well known fact how much salt they love, right! No thanks. I'll limit my dietary intake of salt . Except for maybe the odd sprinkle with my lemon. And tequila.
Sometimes I start my morning with a glass of water, slice of lemon and the smallest pinch of salt. It's that pinch of salty goodness that stops me from peeing it out 10 minutes after I drink that glass of water, hopefully keeping me hydrated longer.
Last week during my Acupuncture treatment at Earth Point Energy Centre, the practitioner reminded me of how powerful salt can be when used externally. Salt is incredibly absorbing and can be a wonderful tool for healing and clearing energetic spaces with rooms and for the body.
I often recommend epsom salt foot soaks or baths for my clients. The magnesium is readily absorbed into the body and soothes tired aching muscles. I hadn't thought about the energetic properties of epsom salts. Exploring this more, there is a whole history of salt use for cleansing auras and energetic bodies. Goddesses, Sages, Intuitive's and Healers have been cleansing with salt for hundreds of years.
The Healer in me must have instinctively known this, soaking in salt baths since I was 10. I've been a lover of the ocean for years, the most natural salt cleanse there is. There's nothing quite like it. The waves washing over you for a full salty immersion. And in WA, we are totally blessed to have some of the best beaches in the world. The breathing of ocean air helps us to let go and relax.
4 Ways to get more salt in your life (without eating it)
1. Get amongst the waves at the beach. Earlier today I hit Swanbourne Beach with my kids. We had the best time jumping waves, diving through and building sandcastles. Salt water and beach sand for days, I was instantly reminded of my childhood beach camping trips to White Hills where I spent hours playing in the waves. Total freedom. I felt this today. The smell of the ocean, the laughs, getting dumped by big boomers. The ocean lifts your spirit.
2. Himalayan Salt Lamps. These are those lovely pinky orange rock looking lamps you see in wellness centres and shops. I have 3 of them at home. These salt lamps are said to have many health benefits including air purification, improved sleep and reduce static in electricity, all through the production of negative ions. I like the way they look.
3. Salt shower. It has been long believed that salt is a very efficient way to cleanse the body's aura of negative energy. Apply salt to your body in the shower as an all over scrub to exfoliate dead skin and dead energies and entities that may have attached to your auric field.
4. Salt Rooms. There are a couple of these in Perth. I recently discovered my local Salt Room and was totally blown away by the experience, especially the indoor beach. I took a visit with my little one for hay fever relief and found myself enjoying the easier breathing and relaxation that came from being in a room completely all salty! Amazing for a number of ailments from skin allergies to respiratory conditions.
This summer, I will indeed be doing more Summer Salt as part of my daily self care ritual. What's your favourite way to use Salt?
