This post should probably be titled "How to kick your stress in the butt in 30 minutes".
But, I know you. You would have just kept on scrolling. I get it. You are busy. How the heck are you going to find 30 minutes a day to kick your stress to the curb and rid yourself of overwhelm? In between school lunches and lost socks, house work and running a business or managing a team - your time is precious and you are pushed to the limit.
Guess what? You are the most important factor in all this organised chaos and it is time to step up and take charge of the stress that you feel. It just takes a little pause, a few times a day, to get you back into your Flow Zone.
Introducing my 10 x 10 x 10 Method.
Yep. It's that simple. 10 minutes, 3 x a day.
You'll be flicking that stress off your shoulders as quick
as you down that glass at wine o clock.
I wear many hats, some stylish, some as reliable as a good old baseball cap. I'm a business owner, holistic therapist, mentor and coach, mum to 3 kids - 15, 11 and 4, wife to my husband who works 12 hour shifts plus all of the kids sporting activities.
I know I need to delegate and outsource more. But probably like you, there is some guilt around doing that. Some weeks it feels like I am being stretched every which way and I long for weeks holiday to myself. I know that filling my cup first, gives me the strength and sanity to keep on keeping on.
The 10 x 10 x 10 Method, combines ALL of my favourite tools from my holistic toolbox and it is what has kept me relatively calm this past year. I still feel stressed and overwhelmed from time to time, but those feelings no longer take over my life.
Here's what I do each day:
1. Shower meditation
I start my day with a simple shower meditation routine, followed by the application of an aromatic dressing. This entire ritual takes about 10 minutes. My current pattern is to get out of bed at 6am, make kids lunches whilst they eat breakfast and I sip a double espresso. I might throw a load on in the wash, do some dinner prep and usually take 5 minutes to water my garden. By the time this is all done, and the kids are dressed for school, I let them watch ABC whilst I have my shower.
If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram, you'll see I posted this Shower Meditation yesterday. Seriously, the shower is such a great place to meditate and it may be one of the only places that you get 5 minutes of undisturbed time, except for maybe the toilet, unfortunately for me, my 4 year old loves to follow me in there every time. In the shower you can close your eyes and breathe, visualising all the stress washing off your body. I like to imagine the water as golden white light washing over and energising me from head to toe.
After my shower, I apply an Aromatic dressing, a blend of essential oils in a base oil or cream and loving apply all over from my feet all the way up to my head. I am currently loving this blend of clary sage, spearmint, orange, grapefruit and lavender. It is uplifting, hormone balancing, calming and energising all at once. It smells great too. I have also made it into a roller bottle for my handbag so I can apply throughout the day.
2. Semi Supine
I love this Alexander Technique exercise. It is also known as constructive or active rest and is designed to reset the nervous system. A 10 minute practice in the middle of your day will completely restore your energy and your posture. You can do this on your lunch break, just about anywhere.
All you need is a firm flat surface to lay on. Bend your knees, have them hip width apart. Place a book under your head and your hands on your hips. And then close your eyes and breathe.
That is it.
3. Self Foot Reflexology
Every evening when I am winding down on the couch, I massage my feet, in particular, these 3 reflex points for stress. I work the diaphragm reflex, adrenals and the thyroid points. They are all easy to locate on the bottom of the feet, and you will probably find that one or all of these points are quite tender.
If you spend five minutes on each foot, about one and a half minutes on each reflex point, you will do wonders for counter balancing the build up of cortisol and chronic stress in your system.
And if you are like me, watching Netflix, that 10 minutes of foot reflexology quickly turns in to half an hour, bonus!
Taking charge of your life and Stress Symptoms isn't hard. It just takes willingness to change and setting up new habits. If you can find 10 minutes in your day to do at least one of these stress busting activities, then you are well on the way to kicking overwhelm to the curb!
By all means, enjoy your life, keep it real. Have that glass of wine or beer. Drink coffee if you want. Find what works for you. I share these tools with my clients because they are easy to implement and I practice them daily. They work for me, and I know they'll work for you too.
